Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD shared video stills Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
