New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams has announced his plan to back former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, despite an extended period of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Just last month, the mayor had strongly criticized Cuomo, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a recent statement, Adams changed his position, stating he now plans to support the former governor in areas where he maintains strong support.

“I think that it is imperative to mobilize the communities of color that have experienced urban displacement on how important this race is,” the mayor stated.

Adams continued, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and talk directly with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has made headlines internationally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.

In a recent mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent stated they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.

Earlier this year, the mayor had launched his re-election campaign as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later dropped in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across New York City.

At an separate media briefing on the same day, the mayor answered reporters inquiring into the support announcement by saying, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”

The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were seen attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a contentious candidate debate.
