Although People in Germany traditionally possessed a standing as the continent's most devoted advocates of public nudity, fresh survey data indicates that Danish individuals not just more open-minded regarding undressing in public, but also more prone to have practiced it.
Research Parameters
The comprehensive study examined 6 western European countries – United Kingdom, Denmark, the French republic, Germany, Italy and the Spanish kingdom. Findings showed that Danes were most probable to assert that being naked in public was completely fine – in addition to have acted on it.
General Attitudes Across Europe
Predictably, substantial percentages in all six countries agreed that nudity was fine in dedicated naturist spots. Between the vast majority had no objections with private nudist camps, while 77-91% supported designated naturist coastlines.
More than half respondents from Denmark state having been completely naked in open spaces
Country-Specific Attitudes
Although the majority in all participating nations expressed disapproval to nudity in settings including public swimming pools and public gardens, Denmark's views stood out. Approximately thirty-five percent Danish respondents felt it fine to remove clothing on a regular beach, and eighty-seven percent thought stripping off in your own garden was perfectly fine.
Open Countryside Attitudes
Participants from Denmark showed increased tolerance toward public nakedness in the open countryside. However, the majority in other surveyed states – ranging from fifty-eight percent in Germany to 78% in British respondents – considered naked rambling as inappropriate.
Open Water Nudity
Regarding swimming naked in the ocean, inland waters or waterways, Danes exhibited by far the greatest acceptance. Approximately 64% viewed the practice completely fine, in contrast to just twenty-five percent of Italians, thirty-one percent of French respondents, thirty-two percent of UK residents and forty-nine percent of respondents from Germany.
Personal Experience Levels
Danish respondents not only state positive views and also exhibited significant engagement percentages. When asked about which seven settings they had personally been naked as mature individuals, over 50% of respondents from Denmark reported at least one occasion.
That contrasted with 45% of Germans along with 44% of Spanish people. A noticeable gap appeared among these three nations versus the rest, with just 31% of participants from France, twenty-five percent of British people and 22% of Italian participants admitting to stripping off entirely in open spaces in adulthood.
Specific Location Breakdown
- Participants from Denmark were most probable to be unclothed in their personal outdoor space and engage in nude swimming, with 36-37% indicating such practices
- This differs from just 27-29% of Spaniards
- 20-29% of Germans
- 19% of French people
- 13-14% of Britons
- approximately one-tenth of respondents from Italy
Historical German Practices
Participants from Germany, however, demonstrated their dominant role when it concerned stripping off in places expressly created for nudist practices. This reflects Germany's traditional "FKK movement" – a cultural phenomenon originating to the nineteenth century.
Despite decreasing popularity in the past few years, Germany continues to be one of most accepting states globally for being naked in public in specific areas. Areas of beaches, lakesides and campsites are legally designated for clothing-optional recreation.
Designated Naturist Sites
Data indicated that just 12% of Danes had been naked in official nudist locations such as beaches or campgrounds. That exceeded British participation at six percent, matched France's percentages at fourteen percent and Italy's at 11%, but fell below Spain's 22% plus Germany's twenty-five percent.
Openness to Future Nudity
Participants from Denmark furthermore showed more openness to participate in being naked publicly prospectively. Approximately 50% indicated they would be open to remove clothing in a public place, compared with forty-two percent of Germans, 38% of respondents from Spain, thirty-four percent of French people and twenty-nine percent of both British people and Italians.
Group-Specific Trends
Across all six countries, men demonstrated more interest compared to female participants concerning public nudity. Age-related variations also were evident: In Denmark, younger generations were more receptive to clothing-optional practices, whereas in Germany the contrasting situation was observed.
Specifically, thirty-one percent of 18- to 34-year-olds indicated interest to be naked in open spaces, versus 46-48% of over-50s.
