The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Detailing Three Weeks Incarcerated

The ex-president of France will soon publish a book in the coming weeks named Notes from a Cell, detailing the period spent in jail.

The revelation emerged just 11 days following Sarkozy left prison as his appeal proceeds the court ruling for unlawful coordination regarding a scheme to acquire election campaign funds linked to the regime of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Behind bars one sees little, with little to occupy time,” he notes in one passage, indicating the book will focus on his musings from seclusion instead of wider commentary on the overcrowded and struggling French prison system.

“Quiet is absent, which doesn’t exist at the prison, where there is endless commotion,” he states. “The din unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, personal reflection is fortified in prison.”

Release Hearing: Sharing the Struggle

While appealing for release, Sarkozy participated via screen from his cell, describing his time inside as exhausting. He stated to the judge: “I must acknowledge those working in the jail, showing great humanity, easing this difficult experience manageable – as it truly is one.”

“I didn’t expect at this stage of life, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s an ordeal I must endure. I confess it’s hard, extremely tough. It leaves a mark every inmate due to its intensity.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, who served as France’s president from 2007 to 2012, became the inaugural ex-leader of an EU country and the first postwar leader from France to experience jail.

Before entering jail he declared he intended to spend the period to compose an account.

Books in Prison

It remains unclear if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the three books he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the famous story, a plot where a wrongfully accused individual is sentenced to jail but escapes to seek vengeance.

Prison Conditions

The former leader was held secluded due to safety concerns in a cell of about nine sq metres including private facilities in the Paris jail located in the capital. Two bodyguards stayed in the next cell.

Sources mentioned that he had eaten solely dairy snacks in prison because he feared prison cuisine may have been contaminated. Options were available to cook for himself yet he declined, according to reports. It is uncertain if the memoir includes his dietary choices.

Lawyer’s Statements

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who visited his client daily during the incarceration, stated during proceedings he would be safer outside jail compared to inside. “There were death threats, listened to yells at night plus rapid actions in an adjacent room as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Case Background

His incarceration began in late October following the judiciary imposed five years in prison for illegal collaboration related to a plan to secure election financing during his election campaign.

He disputes the charges and is contesting the ruling, with a new trial is scheduled for next spring.
