The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a young woman containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, though additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have large flowers growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
