Line of Duty cast members
Martin Compston are set to reprise their roles in the popular police drama

The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The last series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

The drama launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
