The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
As I enter the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after our chat. It’s a simple symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
However, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and European Breakthrough
This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.
Influences and Playing Style
Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to control his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals
At Monaco, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the senior top prize down the line.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills belief.”
Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
