During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying advice to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
