The people of Israel observe second remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
Israelis have assembled throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are seen as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.
"The bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled state memorials until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' negotiating teams met in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the proposal.
A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an late session of mediated discussions began at evening in Egypt.
The source stated the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, amid differences over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He added that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are striving to narrow the disparities between the both parties.
Critical Issues in Talks
- An enduring truce
- The trade of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance deliveries
- Post-war governance of the area
Public Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, young Hagar - whose brother survived the attack on the gathering, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No place feels like home any longer and until each abducted person return no one will have peace of mind."
"When we see all home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to recover," she continued.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to express their support for the families of the captives. Israel reports forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "We must do every compromise needed for the captives to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the war to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the captives.
Gaza Situation
At the site of the gathering, grieving people came together to pay their respects.
From that location, the boom of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli bombardment continued.
In the main city, bombardments were noted in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the night comes, the dread comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, described.
"We are afraid of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are resting together, embracing, particularly my little child who places his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we monitor the updates to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."
Health Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had accepted the remains of several people by the midday, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the south region of that area said another two fatalities had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the south region, medical staff said.
