The Reason Los Blancos Have 'Utter Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight berth.

At 18 years old, the midfielder became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated the player following his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and experience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," added he. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.

According to international regulations, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose Spain, Diaz decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club chase future success.

After his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
