The Red Devils Set to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months left on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
